Cultivating Loyalty

Cultivating Loyalty

Sermon by Pastor Peter Lui

Concluding Elim Church’s “Cultivating Spiritual Virtues” series, Pastor Peter Lui explores the often-overlooked but deeply biblical virtue of loyalty. In a culture where commitments are easily broken and relationships often depend on convenience, Scripture presents loyalty as a reflection of God’s own unchanging character.

Pastor Peter explains that while the world defines loyalty as simply remaining faithful to a person, organization, or cause, the Bible reveals a much richer picture. Biblical loyalty is rooted in God’s covenant faithfulness—a steadfast commitment that remains true even through hardship, disappointment, and sacrifice.

Loyalty Reflects God’s Character

The foundation of loyalty begins with God Himself.

Throughout the Old Testament, God repeatedly describes Himself as the faithful God, remaining true to His covenant despite Israel’s repeated failures. Pastor Peter points to God’s covenant with Abraham, where God promised an everlasting relationship not only with Abraham but also with his descendants. Even after generations of disobedience, exile, and rejection, God never abandoned His promises.

The New Testament reveals that these covenant promises ultimately find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Through Christ, God’s faithful love extends not only to Israel but also to all who believe, bringing both Jews and Gentiles into His family.

God’s loyalty is therefore not based on human performance but on His own faithful nature.

As children of God, we are called to reflect that same faithfulness in our own lives.

Loyalty to God

Our first loyalty belongs to God alone.

Pastor Peter reminds us that people—including churches, leaders, and even fellow believers—may disappoint us. But God never will.

When disappointments come, believers must resist allowing human failures to weaken their relationship with God. Instead, we are called to continue trusting Him, knowing that His love and faithfulness remain constant.

True loyalty means choosing to remain faithful to Christ through every season of life, whether joyful or difficult.

Loyalty to God’s Kingdom

Pastor Peter shares personally about his decades of ministry, reflecting on God’s faithfulness throughout his calling. Though ministry has included seasons of fatigue, discouragement, and even moments when he considered stepping away, God continually renewed his strength and reminded him of the importance of finishing well.

Drawing from Jesus’ parable of the minas, he reminds the church that every believer has been entrusted with gifts, opportunities, and responsibilities.

God is not looking merely for successful servants but for faithful ones.

Our calling is to faithfully steward what God has placed in our hands until Christ returns.

Like the Apostle Paul, believers are encouraged to persevere until they can confidently say:

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Loyalty to Others

Biblical loyalty is also expressed in the way we treat people.

Quoting Proverbs 17:17, Pastor Peter reminds us:

“A friend loves at all times.”

Loyalty is tested not during easy seasons but during adversity.

The sermon highlights several biblical examples:

  • Jonathan, who remained loyal to David despite sacrificing his own claim to the throne.
  • Ruth, who stayed faithfully with Naomi when returning home would have been far easier.
  • Barnabas, who believed in John Mark after others had given up on him, helping restore him into fruitful ministry.

These examples demonstrate that loyalty chooses faithfulness over convenience and encourages restoration rather than rejection.

Practical Ways to Cultivate Loyalty

Pastor Peter concludes with practical challenges for every believer:

  • Keep your promises.
  • Speak well of others, especially when they are not present.
  • Stand beside friends during hardship.
  • Pray faithfully for those God has entrusted to your care.
  • Correct lovingly rather than criticizing publicly.
  • Forgive quickly and extend grace.

These simple acts of faithfulness build relationships that honour God and reflect His character.

Final Reflection

Loyalty is more than remaining committed when life is easy. It is choosing faithfulness when circumstances tempt us to walk away.

God has demonstrated unwavering loyalty toward us through His covenant, His promises, and ultimately through Jesus Christ.

As His people, may we reflect that same steadfast faithfulness:

  • Loyal to God.
  • Loyal to His Kingdom.
  • Loyal to one another.

May we remain faithful until the day we hear our Lord say:

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

For a life marked by loyalty is ultimately a life that reflects the faithfulness of God Himself.
