Guard The Home God Designed
Sermon by Ps Catherine Chan
Ps Catherine Chan begins the sermon with a powerful observation: in today’s world, people invest heavily in protecting their homes physically through locks, passwords, CCTV systems, and digital security. Yet many homes remain spiritually vulnerable.
She asks a deeply important question:
“Who is guarding the spiritual atmosphere of our homes?”
While a house may appear secure externally, if no one intentionally safeguards the spiritual atmosphere within, it becomes susceptible to worldly influences, emotional distance, and spiritual compromise.
God Designed Homes to Carry His Presence
Ps Catherine reminds the church that God never intended homes to simply be places for shelter and comfort. From the Garden of Eden, God’s desire has always been for homes to be places where:
- His presence dwells
- Relationships flourish
- Faith is cultivated
- Spiritual legacy is passed down to future generations
Using Genesis 2:15, she explains how Adam was instructed to both “work” and “keep” the garden:
- To work — meaning to nurture and cultivate
- To keep — meaning to guard and protect
Likewise, healthy homes do not happen accidentally. Strong marriages, healthy relationships, and spiritually vibrant families require intentional care and spiritual stewardship.
H — Have God’s Presence
A God-designed home thrives on the presence of God.
Ps Catherine emphasizes the difference between:
- Having God occasionally as a guest
- And having Him fully as Lord over the home
When Jesus is Lord of the home:
- He shapes conversations
- Directs decisions
- Influences attitudes
- Sets the spiritual atmosphere
God’s presence can be cultivated through simple but intentional habits such as:
- Praying before meals
- Reading God’s Word together
- Worshipping at home
- Responding gently during conflict
- Praying for loved ones daily
Ps Catherine compares God’s presence to fragrance filling a room — unseen, but deeply experienced by everyone within the home.
O — Open Hearts
A God-designed home must also be a safe space for hearts to open honestly and lovingly.
Drawing from Ephesians 4:29-32, Ps Catherine reminds the church that words carry tremendous power:
- They can heal or wound
- Build or destroy
- Encourage or discourage
Families often do not fall apart because of one major crisis, but through small unresolved hurts, neglect, misunderstandings, and emotional distance that slowly accumulate over time.
Healthy homes are marked by:
- Kindness
- Tender-heartedness
- Patience
- Forgiveness
- Safe communication
Ps Catherine shares personally about caring for her father who struggles with dementia, reminding the church not to take family members for granted and to create safe spaces where loved ones feel heard, accepted, and embraced even during difficult seasons.
M — Model the Faith
Using Deuteronomy 6, Ps Catherine highlights God’s command to the Israelites to pass down His Word intentionally to future generations.
Faith was never meant to be limited to religious activities alone. Instead, it should be woven naturally into everyday life:
- Conversations at home
- Morning routines
- Meal times
- Car rides
- Bedtime prayers
She reminds parents, grandparents, and every believer that children and younger generations often learn more from what they observe than from what they are told.
Authentic faith is not about perfection, but about showing genuine dependence on God even during life’s struggles.
E — Establish Healthy Boundaries
Ps Catherine then emphasizes the importance of setting healthy spiritual boundaries within the home.
Just as locks protect homes physically, godly boundaries protect hearts spiritually.
Joshua’s declaration:
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”
was a bold spiritual decision to resist compromise and protect future generations from drifting away from God.
Healthy boundaries include:
- Protecting family time
- Limiting unhealthy media influence
- Being mindful of social media content
- Setting aside distractions during meals and conversations
- Staying spiritually alert to worldly influences
Ps Catherine warns that modern culture constantly competes for the hearts of both adults and children, especially through digital platforms and social media.
Boundaries, however, are not restrictions meant to control people harshly. Instead, they are expressions of love and protection that preserve peace, purity, and spiritual health.
A Call To Be Watchmen
The sermon closes with a strong challenge from Ezekiel 33 — the call to become spiritual watchmen over our homes.
This responsibility does not belong only to parents:
- Singles can pray for siblings and family members
- Grandparents can intercede for younger generations
- Youth can stand in the gap for their homes
- Every believer has a role to play
Ps Catherine calls the church to:
- Fill homes with God’s presence
- Build safe and loving relationships
- Model authentic faith
- Establish healthy godly boundaries
In a world full of distractions and compromise, God is calling His people to intentionally guard the homes He designed.
