GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE “Hold The Line”
“Hold the Line”
Sermon by Pastor Derek Foo
This Good Friday service powerfully combined a heartfelt skit, “Hold the Line,” with a deeply reflective message by Pastor Derek Foo—bringing to life one central truth:
Even when we hang up, God never hangs up on us.
The Reality of the Human Heart
The skit portrays conversations on a counselling hotline, revealing the hidden struggles people carry:
- A young person overwhelmed and feeling invisible
- Someone burdened by suffering and unanswered prayers
- Another trapped in shame and self-condemnation
Different stories—but one common response:
the instinct to withdraw, disconnect, and “hang up.”
Pastor Derek explains that this is deeply human.
We hang up:
- When pain overwhelms us
- When shame makes us hide
- When disappointment teaches us to stop hoping
Sometimes it’s not one big crisis—but the accumulation of life’s pressures that causes us to shut down.
Why Good Friday Matters
Good Friday answers a critical question:
What did God do when humanity “hung up” on Him?
The answer is astonishing:
God did not walk away—He came close.
John 1:14 reminds us that Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us.
God didn’t send advice, solutions, or slogans—He sent Himself.
Jesus:
- Walked among the broken
- Sat with the rejected
- Touched the hurting
- Moved toward sinners
He didn’t avoid pain—He entered into it.
The Cross: Where Love Stayed
At the cross, Jesus didn’t just come close—
He stayed.
Even when:
- He was rejected
- Betrayed
- Mocked
- Crucified
He remained.
As highlighted in the skit:
“Staying is not a strategy. Staying is love.”
That is the heart of Good Friday.
What Jesus Carried for Us
Good Friday is not just about suffering—it is about substitution.
1. He Carried Our Sin
Jesus took the punishment we deserved.
- Our guilt → placed on Him
- Our debt → paid in full
Some stains cannot be removed by effort—
they are removed when someone else carries them.
2. He Carried Our Sorrows
Jesus understands:
- Pain
- Grief
- Rejection
- Emotional weight
He is not distant from our struggles—
He has experienced them.
3. He Carries Us Back to God
Sin separates us from God—but Jesus restores us.
Through the cross:
- The broken relationship is healed
- The way back to God is opened
- Grace becomes available to all
Why Good Friday Is “Good”
Good Friday may look like loss—but it is actually victory.
It is “good” because:
- Love entered into suffering
- Sin was defeated
- Salvation was made possible
At the cross, what looked like defeat
became the moment of redemption.
The Line Is Still Open
The message of Good Friday is simple yet powerful:
No matter where you are—the line is still open.
Even if:
- You feel tired
- You feel ashamed
- You feel disappointed
- You feel far from God
You can still come back.
A Call to Respond
Pastor Derek ends with a clear invitation:
Come back on the line.
- Stop carrying everything alone
- Stop hiding behind shame
- Stop withdrawing in silence
Instead:
- Bring your burdens to Jesus
- Trust in His finished work
- Receive His grace and forgiveness
Because at the cross, Jesus already did everything necessary.
Final Reflection
Good Friday answers the deepest questions of the human heart:
- If God is real, why the cross?
→ Because we need rescue, not advice - If God is good, why suffering?
→ Because love was willing to enter it - If the cross is love, why does it look like loss?
→ Because we have not yet seen what it saved
Today, the line is still open.
The question is no longer whether God is there—
but whether we will return to Him.
