Being a Discipler
🌟 Sermon Summary: Being a Discipler | Pastor Peter Lui | 31 August 2025 🌟
This Sunday, Pastor Peter Lui concluded the August sermon series on discipleship with a vital call: Don’t just be a disciple — be a discipler too.
Drawing from Mark 16:15 and Matthew 28:19–20, Pastor Peter reminded us that the Great Commission is a mandate to be obeyed and a mission to be fulfilled.
🔑 Four Key Questions from the Sermon:
1️⃣ Who is a discipler?
A discipler is not static — he goes, like Jesus who walked the shores of Galilee to call His first disciples.
A discipler reproduces by teaching others to follow Christ, not just gaining knowledge but embracing a life of surrender (Luke 9:23).
2️⃣ Why be a discipler?
Simply to obey Christ and fulfill His Commission.
Our one life is like a seed — it can either remain alone or multiply when sown. “Only one life, ’twill soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last.”
Discipling is our way of leaving a lasting legacy.
3️⃣ What does a discipler do?
Teaches – imparting truth head-to-head and heart-to-heart.
Trains – turning principles into practice through life-on-life learning.
Empowers – entrusting responsibility and releasing disciples into ministry.
Affirms – building confidence, reinforcing identity, and celebrating growth.
4️⃣ How do we become disciplers?
Through mentoring and modeling – “Imitate me, as I imitate Christ.”
By building accountability and community – creating safe spaces for growth.
By equipping for ministry – helping every believer discover and use their God-given gifts for service (Ephesians 4:11–13; 1 Peter 4:10).
🌱 A Seed Illustration:
Pastor Peter held up a small seed and reminded us: Jesus saw potential in fishermen, tax collectors, and “nobodies” — not for what they were, but for what they could become. Likewise, every seed holds a plantation. When planted, nurtured, and multiplied, it can turn the world upside down for Christ.
🙌 Final Challenge:
“Don’t be satisfied with just being a disciple. Go and find another to disciple. Multiply, not just add.”
Being a discipler is both a responsibility and a privilege. It is costly, but the eternal reward far outweighs the sacrifice. Let us consecrate our one life to the Lord and reproduce others for His glory.
