Always Abounding in the Work of Reconciliation

Always Abounding in the Work of Reconciliation

🌟 Sermon Summary – “Always Abounding in the Work of Reconciliation”
Speaker: Pastor Derek Foo | Date: 12 October 2025

As Elim Church continues its yearly theme of “Steadfast, Immovable, Always Abounding in the Work of the Lord”, Pastor Derek reminded us that one of the greatest works we are called to abound in is the work of reconciliation.

In a world torn apart by division — between nations, races, families, and even believers — God calls His people to be a reconciling presence. The Gospel’s central message is not division but reconciliation: God restoring broken relationships through Christ and calling us to do the same.

✝️ 1. God Reconciled Us — So We Reconcile Others

Reconciliation begins with God. As 2 Corinthians 5:18 declares, “All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ.”

From Genesis to Revelation, God’s plan has always been to bridge the divide between Himself and humanity. Though sin separated man from God, the cross of Christ tore the veil in the temple — restoring access and welcoming us home, not just pardoned but embraced.

Just like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, God runs toward us with open arms. His reconciliation is not a cold legal pardon but a warm invitation into relationship.

And now, having been reconciled, we carry that same mission. We are called to be Christ’s ambassadors, bearing the message of reconciliation to a world in conflict. It’s not enough to believe in peace — we must embody it through forgiveness, restoration, and love in action.

🕊️ 2. Christ Broke Down the Walls — So We Must Build the Bridges

Ephesians 2:14–16 reminds us that “He Himself is our peace… having destroyed the dividing wall of hostility.”
Jesus didn’t just talk about peace — He became our peace. Through His sacrifice, He tore down every wall that separated Jew and Gentile, race from race, class from class, and sinner from saint.

The Gospel creates one new humanity, where diversity no longer divides but unites under Christ. As believers, we are not defined by race, culture, or background, but by our shared identity as God’s family.

Pastor Derek reminded us that as Singaporeans, we understand this — our society thrives on unity amid diversity. But beyond our national identity, we are called as Christians to something higher: to live as bridge builders in a divided world.

Building bridges means taking the first step — choosing reconciliation even when it’s uncomfortable or undeserved. Just as Christ took the first step toward us, we too must reach across the divides in our homes, workplaces, and communities.

💬 Key Challenge:

  • Choose peace in a culture of hostility.

  • Choose mercy in a culture of offence.

  • Choose humility in a culture of pride.

  • Choose obedience in a culture of self-justification.

Whether you need reconciliation with God or with someone else, the call is the same:

“God reconciled us — now we reconcile others.
Christ broke down the walls — now we build the bridges.”

Let’s abound in this work of reconciliation — the heart of God’s mission and the mark of His people.
