Known by His Name
🌿 Sermon Title: Known by His Name
👤 Speaker: Pastor Derek Foo
📅 Date: 9 November 2025
📖 Main Texts: Genesis 14:18–22, Deuteronomy 10:17, Exodus 3:13–15
This Sunday, Pastor Derek Foo opened the new sermon series “The Hebrew Names of God” by reminding us that names carry deep meaning — they declare identity and purpose. Just as we choose meaningful names for our children, God intentionally reveals His names to show us His character and invite us into deeper relationship with Him.
“Every name of God is more than a title — it’s an invitation: to know Him more deeply, to trust Him more fully, and to walk with Him more faithfully.”
Pastor Derek explained that God reveals His name so that His people may know Him, understand His nature, and walk in covenant with Him. The better we know His name, the stronger our faith in His heart and promises.
🔹 1. El – God Above All (No Rival)
In Genesis 14, after Abraham’s victory over four kings, Melchizedek declared that it was “God Most High (El Elyon)” who delivered his enemies into his hands.
This first revealed name shows that God is supreme above all other powers and idols.
Just as Abraham was reminded that victory belongs to the Lord, we too must recognize that success, control, and comfort can compete for God’s place in our lives. El Elyon calls us to tear down every rival throne and worship Him alone — for He is above all.
🔹 2. Elohim – God Over All (No Equal)
The Bible opens with “In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.”
This plural form of “El” is known as the “plural of majesty,” expressing God’s completeness, power, and perfection.
Elohim speaks of the Creator and Sustainer — the One who brings light out of darkness and order out of chaos.
When life feels unstable, we can trust that Elohim still holds everything together. He is not just mighty; He is sovereign. Nothing escapes His control — not your past, your present, or your future.
🔹 3. Yahweh – God With All (No Distance)
When God revealed His personal name to Moses — “I AM WHO I AM” (Yahweh) — He invited His people into a covenant relationship.
Yahweh means the ever-present, self-existent One — faithful, compassionate, gracious, and abounding in love.
While Abraham knew God as mighty, Moses encountered Him as personal. This same Yahweh who delivered Israel from Egypt now dwells with us through Jesus Christ — the “I AM” who became Immanuel, “God with us.”
Through Jesus, the infinite God became near, approachable, and present.
🔹 Our Response
If God is above all, will you give Him your worship?
If God is over all, will you trust Him with what you can’t control?
If God is with all, will you walk closely with Him in faith and obedience?
God is above all — no rival.
God is over all — no equal.
God is with all — no distance.
Let us draw near to the One who first drew near to us, and live lives that reflect His great and holy name.
